Who is affected by sexual violence?

  • 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed, 2.8% attempted). (2)
  • 1 in 6 men has been sexually abused or assaulted. (3)
  • 21% of TGQN (transgender, genderqueer, nonconforming) college students have been sexually assaulted (4)

Where do sexual assaults usually occur? 

  • 55% of sexual assaults occur at or near the victim's home
  • 15% occur in an open public place
  • 12% occur at or near a relative's home
  • 10% in an enclosed but public area, such as a parking lot or garage
  • 8% occur on school property
